Raymond Kloiber | 9 & 14 August 1909 |
Raymond Kloiber, a carpenter employed by the Morgan company, was almost instantly killed at about 6:30 o'clock Sunday evening by being struck by a locomotive of the Wisconsin Central Railroad company near the Seventeenth street intersection of the railroad. The body was badly crushed, the face and head being smashed in and the left leg being crushed near the ankle.
The man was going north along the railroad track and the engine was speeding south at the time, and why Kloiber did not get off the track is an unanswered question. Witnesses of the accident decalre the engineer blew the whistle repeatedly and reversed the locomotive, which slid about forty feet on the down grade before striking Kloiber.
The man had been out of the city, participating in a picnic in a grove west of Twentyth street, and was returning to the Oshkosh house on Ce?pe street, where he boarded. It is claimed he appeared to pay no attention to the oncoming engine or to the warblings of the whistle.
The statement of the men in charge could not be obtained, as the operator at the south side station was at supper at the time. Local Agent C. W. Hodson spent half the forenoon today endeavoring to obtain information as to the facts. As nearly as they could be learned they were as follows. The engine, No. 2120, was returning to Fond du Lac from some point north of Oshkosh and was in charge of J. C. Barrett, as engineer, W. Crawford, as fireman, and J. Dust, as pilot. The pilot is the conductor when there is no train attached to an engine. The machine was running at a good rate of speed, having passed nearly to the city limits, when the engineer discovered the man approaching on the track.
Kloiber appeared to make no effort to leave the track, it is claimed, and the engineer then applied the brakes and even reversed his engine, but he could not stop in time to avoid striking the man. Kloiber was knocked down outside the rails and the locomotive passed over one leg. It is not known that Kloiber was deaf and why he did not give attentions to the warnings is not known. It is said he was about forty-two years of age and he had a family, consisting of his wife and two children who reside at Almena, Wis. He also had a brother, John Kloiber, who boards at 812 Sixth street.
Mrs. Kloiber has been notified of her husband's death and has been asked what disposition shall be made of the remains, but no reply has been received from her as yet. The body was picked up by the police and was lying about forty feet north of Seventeenth street, It was taken in the city ambulance to the undertaking establsihment of Nesbitt & Shopper, where it will remain awaiting instructions from Mrs. Kloiber.

John Kloiber | 18 August 1911 |
John Kloiber, a young man well known in the Sixth and Thirteenth wards, committed suicide by hanging early this morning. He was unmarried, and had no near relatives in this city, so far as could be learned. He had been boarding at the Central house on Sixth street, of which Anton Mondl is proprietor. This morning the man's body was found hanging from the transom in the doorway of his room, a rope fastened around his neck.
Mr. Kloiber was about thirty years of age, and had been employed at the Oshkosh Bottle Wrapper factory for some time. He did teaming and other work, running the hay press at the bottle wrapper factory up to last Saturday. Previous to that he had been working in the woods in the northern part of the state, being employed by different concerns.
It is said by the people who conduct the boarding house at which he resided that Kloiber had apparently been brooding over something for some time, and various instances go to show that his self-destruction was pre-meditated. He was known to have been drinking hard for some time, as he was paid off at the bottle wrapper plant Saturday and did not return to work this week, although urged to do so.
The deceased was last seen alive at about 5 o'clock this morning, when Mrs. Mondl saw him sitting out of doors at the boarding house. At that time he said to Mrs. Mondl, "Oh, I'm so sick." She advised him to "behave himself."
At 6 o'clock this morning, when the Mondl boy went to call the roomers on the second floor, he saw Kloiber's head half-way out of the door of his room, and on investigating found that Kloiber was hanging in the doorway with his knees a few inches from the floor. He wanted to take the man down, but other boarders who were awakened advised him to let the body alone while the police were being notified. Officers Rothe and Ohmsted arrived at the scene at about 6:20. The former cut the rope, and the body, still limp aud warm, fell to the floor. There wore no marks except a deep mark from the rope around the neck.
The rope with which the hanging was done was an ordinary wash line, secured from the Mondl barn. It was tied above the doorway, the transom and door both being open, and the marks on the transom spoke of a heavy weight on the rope. A common slip-knot was made in the end about the man's neck, burying the rope in the flesh. The officers state that the case looked like a clear example of suicide.
Officer Rothe searched the dead man's clothes and trunk. There was no money, but a number of papers were found among the clothing. One was an accident insurance policy, which he is said to have discontinued about a year ago. Officer Ohmsted summoned the undertakers, and the remains were taken to the establishment of Spikes & McDonald.
The deceased had no surviving relatives in Oshkosh. A brother, R. Kloiber, was killed in a railroad accident on th Wisconsin Central railroad, in July, 1910 [1909] and the deceased, it is said, brooded over that accident quite frequently. He is also said to have had a brother who committed suicide by hanging in Germany, where the deceased was born.
That Kloiber meditated suicide is believed from the character of remarks which he frequently made. More than once he threatened to end his life, but his companions treated the matter as a joke. But one significant incident occured Thursday morning, when Kloiber was in the saloon of Robert Ziegenhagen, on Fifth and Ohio street. Kloiber was drinking a glass of beer, and a fly fell into the glass and was drowned. Kloiber, talking half to himself, muttered, "Poor fly; but 1 won't be in this world very long myself."
This and other incidents of the kind were generally accepted by his friends as jokes, as the threat was often made. Kloiber had a way of making a great many friends, and he was well liked by those who knew him. He was regarded as an honest man, his great fault being his failing for drink. But he was unable to save his money, spending it as fast as he earned it. He was a good worker, and several times he had been sent for to return to work at the bottle wrapper factory. But for about a week the people at the boarding house regarded him as slightly out of his right mind, due to brooding and indulgence in drink, so though not really expected, his suicide did not cause a great deal of surprise.
